The NSW Public Spaces Charter was developed by the NSW Government to ensure everyone in NSW can access high-quality public spaces. A practitioner’s guide was developed to support the NSW Public Spaces Charter in collaboration with Dr Danièle Hromek, principal of Djinjama.
Dr Hromek brought a Country centred approach to the project and contextualised the relationship between Country and public space and what this means for Aboriginal peoples. This approach guided the Charter to reflect on Country Design principles and how to build them into the way public space is planned, designed, managed and activated.
Dr Hromek provided authorship of sections of the document, and comprehensive peer review to ensure cultural appropriateness and inclusion of First Nations values and understandings of Country are reflected in understandings of public spaces.
Djinjama also provided guidance on the NSW Public Spaces Charter Easy Read. The purpose was to present the Public Spaces Charter in an ‘easy to read’, accessible document format to ensure understandings of public spaces are accessible to everyone.
Djinjama honours our connections to Country, community, culture and kin through our work. Djinjama’s projects actively interact with lands, waters and air, and as such we actively protect the rights of Country to be healthy in our work. We respect Traditional Custodians who have long cared for Country and aim to elevate First Voices in all our work. We are grateful to Elders and Knowledge Holders for their continued sharing of wisdom, story, language, and knowledge.
