The Language and Terminology for Referencing Aboriginal Culture and Heritage in Design of the Built Environment document was authored by Dr Danièle Hromek, published by Djinjama in 2019, updated in 2021.
Using correct language is an important part of truth telling, which is vital to true reconciliation and conciliation. Therefore, this guide has been established to support more respectful and appropriate engagement with Aboriginal culture and heritage in the design of the built environment. While Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures have their own First Languages, most speak English with words drawn into the English language from their cultures. Using language that reflects those adopted English words ensures that First Peoples know you are including them.
Djinjama honours our connections to Country, community, culture and kin through our work. Djinjama’s projects actively interact with lands, waters and air, and as such we actively protect the rights of Country to be healthy in our work. We respect Traditional Custodians who have long cared for Country and aim to elevate First Voices in all our work. We are grateful to Elders and Knowledge Holders for their continued sharing of wisdom, story, language, and knowledge.
